Why “Diren Gezi Park! Occupy Gezi!”?

I decide to give general information about the resistance in Taksim Gezi Park, as many of my friends are asking me for deeper background information.
Short History
In Istanbul many environmentalist groups, human rights defenders and civil society organisations are trying to protect the only park in the city centre more than two years. The project was introduced by the Prime Minister of Turkey two weeks before the elections in 2011. After the declaration of the Prime Minister, The Istanbul Municipal Council accepted a project to change the only park in the centre of Istanbul into a shopping mall looking like the military barracks called Topçu Kışlası that was built in 1830 and demolished in 1940 by January 2012. In the making the project there was no democratic process to include any ideas of the civil society and the citizens of Istanbul.
Then Turkish Architects Chamber and other civil society organisations asked the Cultural Heritage Protection Committee to decide about Taksim Gezi Park by 5th February 2012.
The citizens of Istanbul started the demonstrations to protect Gezi Park by 12th February 2012.  By March 2012, the citizens and more than 70 civil society organisations formed a coalition called “Taksim Dayanışması / Taksim Solidarity”.
Taksim Dayanışması also made public demonstration after the government opened a tender call for the construction of the new project. The Coalition demanded the government to save a public heritage as Gezi Park and Taksim Square is the essential social, cultural, historical witness of last 70 years of Republic of Turkey. The Coalition insisted on the democratical universal participative process should be exercised about a change of this kind of important matter. The Coalition underlined the importance of Gezi Park, as it is the only space in Taksim area to gather in emergency situations such as earthquake. The ecological and historical importance of the park is also very important.
The business owners made a public statement about Gezi Park, as they started to receive orders to leave the park that declaring them illegal.
Another citizens’ initiative called Taksim Platform gave a public statement on the developments of the project, they asked how it is possible to start the construction without the approval of Cultural Heritage Protection Committee. Taksim Dayanışması organised a sit-in in Taksim Square on 24th November 2012. Taksim Dayanışma submitted petition to save Taksim Gezi Park signed 50 thousand citizens to the government on 18th December 2013.
Istanbul Cultural Heritage Protection Committee actually decided to keep the centre without planned shopping mall project on 16th January 2013. Despite of the decision of Istanbul Cultural Heritage Protection Committee to stop the execution of the project on 16th January 2013, the government decided go on with the works unfortunately.
Taksim Dayanışması organised a press conference on 25th January 2013, and expressed their concerns about Taksim Gezi Park.
Prime Minister declared that “decision of the Committee is not important for me and we reject the rejection of the committee, the project to build a shopping mall and hotel in the area of the park will continue” on 4th February 2013. After this declaration the historical pedestrian bridge of Taksim Gezi Park was demolished on 11th February 2013.
After the declaration by the prime minister, on 28th February 2013 Higher Cultural Heritage Committee gave a decision against Istanbul Cultural Heritage Committee just as it was declared so. Majority of Higher Committee was made of ministerial officers and managers instead of independent experts.
On 15th March 2013, the Coalition founded Taksim Gezi Park Protection and Beautification Association and the Assocation organised a festival on 13th April 2013 with attendance of more than 20 thousand people.
In addition there were other attempts to save Gezi Park such as collecting 100 thousand more signatures and organising meditation/yoga gathering on 22nd April 2013.
Because of this process I tried to summarise above, the issue of Taksim Gezi Park became a symbol of participative democracy, rule of law and human rights in Turkey as the government wants to dictate its decisions fiercely. That is why many activists are calling the government to listen to its citizens and take into consideration of the public demands in decision making processes, as there are no signs to maintain a participative democracy in Turkey and the problems about different human rights and democracy issues are growing more and more especially in the last 3 years. The citizens of Turkey are worried about the future of Turkey and do not want to be ruled by the tyranny of the parliamentary majority.
I will go on describing the events of the last 8 days in another post.

DAHA GÜZEL BİR DÜNYA İSTİYORUZ!

-Aleksis Grigoropulous’un anısına…/ Remembering Alexandros Grigoropoulos...-

Bize yardım edin

Terörist, anarşist değiliz

Sizin çocuklarınızız!

Hayal kuruyoruz…

Öldürmeyin hayallerimizi

Hız aldık…

Kesmeyin hızımızı

Hatırlayın…

Bir zamanlar siz de gençtiniz

Şimdi paranın peşindesiniz, sırf gösteriş ilgilendiriyor sizi

Şişmanladınız, saçlarınız döküldü

Unuttunuz her şeyi

Bizi desteklemenizi beklerdik

İlgilenmenizi…

Bir kere olsun iftihar etmenizi bizimle

Boşuna…

Yalan hayatlar yaşıyorsunuz, başınızı öne eğdiniz

Pantolonlarınızı bile indirdiniz

Öleceğinizi günü öyle bekliyorsunuz

Hayal kurmuyorsunuz, âşık olmuyorsunuz, yaratıcı değilsiniz

Sadece satın alıyor ve satıyorsunuz

Her yerde maddecilik… Sevgi yok.

Sahici olan hiçbir şey yok hiçbir yerde

Nerede velilerimiz… Nerede onca sanatçı

Niye bizi korumak sokaklara dökülmüyorsunuz

Öldürüyorlar bizi burada

Yardım edin

İmza: Çocuklar

Not: Daha fazla gaz bombası fırlatmayın bize. Biz kendiliğinden ağlamasını da biliriz.

The election day in USA finally came... This is the moment that we, the citizens of the world, also are waiting for a long time...

I believe in the change that Barrack OBAMA can create in this poor planet... I hope that he will be working to make this planet a peaceful place in equality and harmony.

At least the hope for good sounds cool!

Let's see what will come out tomorrow... :)

Remembering Uğur Mumcu / Uğur Mumcu'yu hatırlamak...

Ugur MUMCU
(August 22nd 1942-January 24th 1993)
A Courageous Intellectual to Remember...

Uğur MUMCU was a pioneer in investigative journalism in Turkey...

Uğur Mumcu was born on August 22nd, 1942. After his studies at the Ankara University Faculty of Law, he practiced as a lawyer for some time.
Switching to journalism in 1974, Mumcu defended democracy and human rights in his writings, which he based entirely on concrete knowledge and facts, never betraying the principles of his profession. He regarded "the crime of our age" is to remain silent and indifferent about events of life.
"A murderer is a murderer, no matter if from the right or left."
He pressed for the investigation of many cases of the murder, without looking their political identity, of those who were murdered for their convictions and from terrorist attacks. He provided concrete evidence about the relation between acts of terror and arms traffickers and about the national and international aspects of the steadily rising reactionary organizations.

Uğur Mumcu was assassinated by the explosion of a bomb that was fixed to his car on January 24th, 1993...

To be Karl Marx?

Karl MARX
German political Philosopher and revolutionary, 1818-1883

“Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains.”

To be Karl Marx?

While relatively obscure during his time, his theories and writing became hugely influential after his death. Like Marx, to be interested in revolutions and the economy, and to write a text as influential as the Communist Manifesto...

"Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite!"

“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it”

Cyprus - two...

There is always a possibility…

When I was walking in Ledra Street in Nicosia, I was feeling very sad. It was quite the same sadness I had when I was in some villages of Kosovo or visiting Auschwitz Camp. I was feeling very depressed, when I read the huge writing on the wall between two sides saying “Nothing is achieved without blood” on the wall in the Greek side. I still want to believe that humans can achieve peace and prosperity in their own countries without any bloody wars, fights or conflicts.

I just heard that the wall in the Greek part of Ledra Street is going to be destroyed… Happiness! Just a first step…

I was showing the banners in Turkish area stating “Let’s get rid of the last divided city in the world in peace” to my international friends, when I was in Ledra Street. Hopefully it will just be written in history books from now on.

Turkish side had demolished the barrier on the other side in December 2005. Now hopefully Greek side is also getting rid of the wall on the other side of the tampon area.

There is always a possibility for change… A change for peace…?

Cyprus - one

Tales from the boundaries of existence

Cyprus

They call Nicosia as "the last divided city of the world". There is indeed a truth lying beneath. Mixed emotions are hidden in the middle of the Ledra Street from both sides. Hatred is in the roots nowadays. Different ways of discrimination and extreme-nationalism can be observed any time in daily life.

The fear of the unknown is developed between the societies since 1974. Unfortunately we look at the past we always see the seeds of hatred... Not many people remember the times of peace any more...

We can easily understand the hatred that was built on the tales of the past by the nationalist groups, the leaders and governments of the both sides… Nowadays Turkish soldiers are said to be only source of problem on the island. It would be too pleasing to know that. Unfortunately I do not agree with that...

Gladly I have friends from both of communities who do not believe in those bullshit and want to live in peace together… I just hope…

[1] (http://www.bbm.gov.tr/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1629)
